Complete guide across Belgrade - Part 1

Welcome to Belgrade! The city where Sava flows into Donau, the city which, believe it or not, is built on 31 hills, a city that never sleeps, a city where time flows fast, and where you have the feeling that you are in an accelerated movie. After a few years of living in this city, I dare say, I can be your guide. So you are welcomed to visit Belgrade someday.

1. Useful information

-The first thing that you will notice in Serbia when you pay is its currency- dinar. The currency can often vary, because as the Serbians say,, the dinar is not tied to the euro”. Its value is now around 117.5din= 1euro, but this also depends on the daily currency course. It might be helpful to pay attention to where you change your money and in which exchange office.
- One of the biggest problems in this city is the parking place (if you are not staying in a hotel that has its own parking lot). Because of parking zones, it might be a good idea to leave your car in some of the local multi-story garages, and to use the city transport. The price of one ticket is 0.7 euro and the same ticket you can use it for every city transport tram, train-metro, bus, trolleybus. Stay away from the illegal taxi drivers, find someone who can call you a taxi with a license.- If you want to find a low- cost accommodation, reserve on Airbnb.com or you can even contact me, and I will be glad to help you out.-Most of the tourists visit Belgrade in spring. The climate often varies, so it may be best to check at the weather forecast before you visit Belgrade. My recommendation is to visit Belgrade is May or September. Avoid visiting it around New Year, since the costs may go higher, and the weather can be quite harsh.-If you come from the direction of Skopje, you can use the direct bus lines, they depart at 23:30; 00:00; 02:00; in Belgrade, you arrive in the morning hours and the price is around 35 euros. Also, you can find an agency that offers transport with a van, the price for a round trip ticket is around 50 euros.

2. Cafes, restaurants, lounge bars...

Let´s talk about the, maybe, the most interesting part of the city for all young people. Belgrade is a city with a lot of locals, bars, restaurants.  It won´t be an easy task to mention only some of them. So, I will try to name some of the places, that you should visit. Kafeterija, Savanova, Kafeterija Secer, Dardaneli, Xplicit, Coffee Dream, Red Bar, Raft Tag, Ceger and from April this year – Starbucks. Some of these can be found in more locations. Restaurants and inns can be found in, as you may already know, Skadarlija, the famous bohemian street. The most famous among them are Dva Jelena, Tri Sesira, Mali Vrabac, and they are just a small number of locals that are situated in this area. As you may guess, Skadarlija is a tourist spot, so the prices are higher. On the other hand, there are many other inns and restaurants that can be recommended and that are rather cheaper, like Stara Hercegovina, Korcagin, Orasac, Kolarac or Berliner. If you prefer a more relaxing option, than maybe Jedno Mesto, Raft Viva, Smokvica, Boutique, Mama Shelter, Pizza Bar, Botako, the ´´Street of the Hungry´´ in New Belgrade, Novak café and restaurant can be a good idea. Finally, if you want a dessert, then Milky, Baloro, Ferdinand Knedle, Vesela Soova, Crna Ovca, Dolce by Tintolino Family are great places for it. About the nightlife in Belgrade, popularly known, it starts with many clubs, rafts, restaurants, and inns. Starting with Kasina, Tarapana, rafts Play, Tag, Hua Hua, Industrija Bar, Mr. Stefan Braun, Gotik, Boho Bar, and continuing with the inns Limun Zut, Korcagin, Svaler, Jazbina, Ima Dana, Jedno Mesto the fun can be guaranteed. Still, there are many nice places left, so I sincerely hope that these names can be good for a start.

3. Knez Mihailova Street and Kalemegdan

As a definition, almost all tourist tours start here. A street that is protected by law, like the oldest and most valuable part of the city, surrounded by buildings from the 19th century on its left and right side. One of the most famous pedestrian zones with the most famous trading centers. It is around 800 meters long and here you can find famous brands like Zara, H & M, Aldo, Superdry, and many others. This street is full of cafés and lounge bars. At the end of the street is located one of the most elite shopping centers, Rajiceva Shopping Center. On the top of the building is located one of the most famous cafés and restaurants in Belgrade, Mama Shelter, with a beautiful view on the street, Kalemegdan, the new part of Belgrade and the confluence of Sava and Donau.
From Knez Mihailova, we go across the tram lines and move on to one of the largest parks in Belgrade, Kalemegdan. Apart from that, at the same time it represents the most significant cultural and historical complex, where the Belgrade Fortress dominates. It possesses a great view on most of the city, view to the river Sava and all of the bridges. Within the Belgrade fortress, there is also a zoo. Opened in 1936, filled with animals from different continents, with a beautiful history, I am leaving you, so that you can discover who Sami, Gabi and Muja are.

4. Two big rivers, Sava and Dunau

When you get tired from shopping centers and people, descend to any side and you will reach some of the riversides. In New Belgrade, riverside Oslobodjenja and riverside in Zemun. In summer, they set an iron bridge to Ratno Ostrvo. An island, where only a small part is accessible to visitors. Lido is a famous beach that is located on the island. People use their free time to enjoy the summer days on the island. On the other side, the river Sava has one of the most beautifully arranged riversides, Savanova. It starts on one side of the Brankov most and it goes further with former warehouses converted into cafés, ports and well-known Belgrade rafts. On the other side, it continues with an urban part of the riverside. Equipped even for kids and with a nice place, Savanova, where you can enjoy your afternoon coffee, relishing the river itself and the view towards New Belgrade. Surely you have heard of Ada Ciganlija, people from Belgrade popularly say, that they don’t have a sea, but they have Ada Ciganlija. In length of about 8km, there is the artificially made Savsko Jezero, on the river Sava itself. Good place for summer relaxation, filled with activities for all people. On its sides you can find beaches and you can enjoy while sunbathing or just cooling. The riverside is full of cafés, restaurants, lounge bars, different locals where you can drink a good coffee and enjoy some good food. Apart from that, you have the opportunity to do some sport, for example, drive a bike, rollerblades, jog or play some team sport on some of the terrains. Finally, Ada Ciganlija is a great place to escape from the daily obligations.

5. Gardos, Avala, Aleksandrov Klub

Gardos is located in the old part of Zemun. It was restored few years ago, and the tower itself is built in 1896. Avala is located at the beginning of the city, in Beli Potok. At the same time, it represents the tallest tower, about 205 meters. Unfortunately, it was destroyed in the war in 1999 and again reconstructed. Nearby you can find the famous Viewpoint and Panorama cafés.
And at the far end is Aleksandrov Klub, honestly, one of my favorite places. It is located on Kosutnjak, with a café and restaurant, a great place for relaxation, situated in a beautiful location. I will leave you alone to discover the rest…
